Buying An Engagement Ring This Christmas
The important factors of buying an Engagement ring, as the saying goes ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’. ‘Diamonds are forever’.
Diamond engagement rings symbolise love and devotion. For centuries proposing has gone hand in hand with an engagement ring.
Choosing an engagement ring is not an easy task. The moment you pop the question, you just want her to fall in love with that sparkling ring; I mean, how could she possibly refuse the proposal and lose that ring?!
We thought we would help you along with some useful tips on how to choose the perfect ring:
Each engagement ring should reflect the person who is wearing it; his or her own style and personality. They are a sign and symbol of love, which will be worn every day for the rest of your life. Therefore choosing the right ring is equally important, as you want something your loved one will be proud to wear and cherish.
- Therefore when buying a diamond engagement ring it is important to pay attention to the 4C’s, Clarity, Cut, Carat and Colour. Each one of these contributes to the overall quality of the diamond you are buying;
- When buying a diamond engagement ring, you should choose your jeweller as you would a doctor.
- The jeweller should have expert training and be able to answer questions and provide answers about the quality of the diamond ring you are buying.
At Mark Lloyd FIPG Master Goldsmith we have many types of diamond engagement rings in stock. However, we can also source diamonds and create bespoke diamond engagement rings unique to you.

The 4 ‘C’s’
Clarity, the less inclusions, blemishes and more clear the diamond the higher the price. The clarity is graded under standard viewing conditions at 10 x the magnification. Grades run from flawless to a level that includes a significant number of imperfections.
The cut of the diamond represents the dimensions of the diamond. A better cut equals a brighter diamond. Diamonds are renowned for their ability to transmit both light and sparkle. When we imagine the cut of a diamond, we tend to think shape i.e. pear, round, emerald. However, the cut grade is really about how the diamond’s facets interact in light. A diamond’s cut is crucial to the stone’s beauty and value.
The carat defines the quality of the diamond. The carat is the weight of the stone and bigger is not always best. It’s important to consider all of the 4 C’s when buying a diamond engagement ring.
Light source and background have a significant impact on the overall appearance of a diamond. A diamond’s colour is graded in a more standardized viewing environment against colour masters. The fewer colours in the stone, the more desirable and valuable it becomes.

A diamond with no colour at all is extremely rare and ranks as the highest colour grade. All diamonds are colour graded on a scale from D (totally colourless).
